The Word – Boaz.

The Word – Boaz.

Hey hey hey!

Happy new week efamily. It feels good connecting with you again and I can truly say that I missed you.

Today’s topic is one I’m interested in because I’ve found myself in few ‘arguments’ concerning Boaz.

I don’t consider myself a relationship expert, but by God’s leading, I may have few answers if you need advice.

In choosing their partners, many people miss the red flag because of ‘love’. Plus, people have talked about Ruth so much that I feel I can write a book about her. Only few talk about Boaz and his qualities.

As I read through the book of Ruth yesterday, I noticed a lot about Boaz! It’s no wonder people pray for ladies to find a Boaz. The man was principled!

I’m not always happy about my character, but one thing I’m glad about is the fact that I can smell time-wasters from a mile away. If we’re still getting to know each other, and you’re already acting like I’m your wife, I WILL RUN!

If you’re ‘toasting’ me and already making me a comedy topic in public, I WILL RUN! I remember a ‘potential bae’ who ‘joked’ about me being too fat and needing to reduce as soon as possible- in the presence of others!
That probably means that if he becomes my partner, he’d ask me to kneel down in public because I added weight.😂

There was another one who wanted me to add my phone to my skin and take it everywhere. So, if I didn’t reply him immediately, trouble!

Nobody told me before I carried my load and ran!

My sisters, don’t deceive yourselves. Love is not blind o, it is the people in it that are blind. I strongly believe that God will show you certain things about a guy before you agree to date him.

You can choose to ignore the signs, or you can choose to RUN!

Let me now show you a few things I noticed about Boaz.

Boaz was kind.

Ruth 2:8-10
So Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with my servant girls. Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along the girls. I have told the men not to touch you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.
At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She exclaimed, “why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me- a foreigner?”

NOTE: This happened BEFORE Naomi asked Ruth to go and sleep at his feet and was before he had ‘intentions’.

He had heard what had happened to her and Naomi and didn’t arrogantly send her out of his field when he caught her picking left overs. Instead, he was kind enough to instruct his men to leave her alone whenever she came. He even called her to eat when it was mealtime. To him, he was just ‘helping’ someone in need.

Biko, which Ruth wouldn’t want to sleep at the feet of Boaz to get noticed? 😂

Ruth 2:19-20
Her mother-in-law asked her, “where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!”
Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one whose place she had been working. “The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,” She said.
“The Lord bless him!” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. “He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead.”

What are people saying about your “potential bae”?
Are people constantly talking about evil things he does (note- does, not did). Be sensitive to know the difference when people are talking about his character before and after Christ!
Not all ‘born-again’ men are for you. If people still talk about his character in alarming ways, RUN!

Also, Boaz was not a cheat!

Ruth 3:11-13
And now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All me fellow townsmen know that you are a woman of noble character.
Although it is true that I am near of kin, there is a kinsman-redeemer nearer than I.
Stay here for the night, and in the morning if he wants to redeem, good; let him redeem. But if he is not willing, as surely as the Lord lives I will do it. Lie here till morning.

After Ruth made her intentions known to Boaz that she wanted him to marry her, he followed due process, even though he was a close relative to her dead husband’s family.

Notice that he said he would first let the person next in line know about it and if he wasn’t willing to marry Ruth, he’d do so!
Boaz was wealthy and could have just used that to marry Ruth, but felt he didn’t want to cheat the next person in case he was also interested in Ruth.

Hmm. This is interesting.
Many of us will catch our partners lying several times before marriage, but expect the spirit of truth to decend on him after the wedding.
How does your ‘potential bae’ treat others? Does he cheat and wins all the time at the detriment of others?

While reading, I noticed that Boaz was a man of sensible words.
What is your partner saying?

I remember liking one tall and handsome guy in my former Institution before I changed to one in Ghana. Honestly, he was a synonym to handsome in the dictionary.
I wasn’t even born again then, but I ran when I noticed that the guy made no sense whenever he opened his mouth.
He was kinda height without ……, the way ladies can also be beauty without ……

Let’s move on.

I’m sorry today’s post is getting long, but I tried my best to sap all my lessons from Boaz o.

After that time, Boaz had a strategy to make Ruth’s wishes come true.

Ruth 4:1
Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate and sat there.
When the kinsman-redeemer he had mentioned came along, Boaz said, “come over here, my friend, and sit down.” So he went over and sat down.

I paused after reading this! See ehn, we need to constantly ask God to reveal things to us whenever we’re about to read the Bible.

Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate and sat there.

Note: In those days, not anyone was allowed to sit at the city gate o.

Most of us know the Proverbs 31 woman because of the qualities noted about her. We fail to notice the ones stated about her husband.

Proverbs 31:23
Her husband is respected at the city gate, where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.

Who is your “husband-to-be” sitting with and where is he sitting?

Do not tell me that friends don’t matter or that hangout venues don’t matter.

Do you consider these things in a partner?
If all his friends are ‘jokers’, please, don’t expect him to be the serious one.

After the next kinsman-redeemer disagreed to marry Ruth, here’s what Boaz said…
Ruth 4: 9-11
Then Baoz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelech, Kilon and Mahlon.
I have also acquired Ruth Moabitess, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among the family or from the town records. Today you are witnesses!”
Then the elders and all those at the gate said, “We are witnesses…”

Who are your witnesses?

Some people are in serious relationships with men who don’t have witnesses! You don’t even know any of his friends or family and he has promised to marry you…for where?
My last relationship was a joke!
I was constantly the one using his pictures as my display picture. I do not remember a single moment when he put my picture up! Not once.
Even on my birthday…😂😂😂

Ahh, mo ma ti go seyin o. (I have dulled before.)

Plus, I noticed that anytime his siblings picked his phone if he wasn’t with it, they never knew who ‘Bolaji’ was!
He put up pictures of other girls, but never mine.

Biko, who does that?
I knew these things but chose to ignore, but thank God for Jesus!

My sisters, I’m not saying you should be disturbing your partner about when last he used your picture as DP, I’m only asking you to be sensitive!

Is he ashamed of you? Or has no witnesses pertaining to your relationship?

Finally, my best thing about Boaz was that he was willing to pursue his babe!

Some of our men are so lazy! My God.

Even though Ruth initiated the relationship, he was willing to do all he could to make it official.

I remember telling a potential bae that I felt he wasn’t fighting for me enough. I even found myself breaking some of my personal rules just to see him.
After that, I was done!

Men, women want to be chased. (Even if for sometime!)
You can’t expect everything to be a walk in the park and move on at every small thing or problem that pops up.

Boaz is remembered because of his qualities. Don’t settle for less than God’s best for your marital life.

It might take some time and all your friends might ask you to be their bridesmaid while your wait for your Boaz.
Don’t settle.

Stay prayerful and don’t act blind to the signs that God shows you. I believe He always shows us things, we better not ignore them!

Thank you for reading till the end!

I know this was quite long, but even I am amazed at all the lessons I got from this!

This post on Chastity has some things noted for Ruths too.

Have a pleasant week ahead.

May destiny helpers favour us and may grace speak for us in places that our qualifications can’t, in Jesus name. Amen.

Love always,

  • Looooooooooooooove!! It’s like you read Jackie Kendall’s book before writing this. haha, it shows the Spirit is One. She stated beautiful things about Boaz too. He’s like Christ’s representative. He was like the definition of 1 Cor 13. He was patient and kind with her. He had compassion on her. Like Christ was to us when we were gentiles and we didn’t know better. I just love Ruth’s and Boaz’s story though like you said, many don’t focus on Boaz a lot. To me, I imagine their love as the mature kind. Beautiful and decent. It might not have all the sparks but I want that kind of love too. You can be sure their love lasted. Why? It was built on a good foundation.

And I laughed while reading this. Kai! Bolaji you’re just too funny. Like my mum usually says something to someone who appears comical and has good wit though passes the message across all the same. “O ti ya ta ara e’
Hehe. Bolaji ya fun Jesu. Kisses.

    • Itunu, if you forget to get me that book ehn..:(

Indeed, their story is encouraging. It showed a waiting period for Ruth and then Boaz attitude towards her showed that he was not a joker. He knew what he wanted and was persistent to go after Ruth. As you said, their love was mature. Haha, to me it had sparks o, the Bible did not just have time to be doing Nollywood story line, but one can still feel the passion they had for one another.

Lol. Mo ti ya fun Jesu o.
Thank you Itunu, you know I love you!

  • Thanks Bolaji for this hilarious post. I trailed you from the comforter’s (Itunu) site. I can stop laughing at those experiences of yours. I learnt a few things about women though. You know those whose creation is so complicated and delicate that God has to start with surgery(removing the ribs) can be complicated at times.
Anyway, may the Lord make me more of Boaz and much more of Christ my perfect example.

    • Haha. Itunu’s site is tha bomb shey!

LOL. We are not as complicated as people think…I guess. We’re just different!

Amen to your prayers. We sure do need more men who act like Boaz in their relationships and like Jesus in all areas of their lives. We have many dysfunctional men, and they carry mistakes into families, families then carry these to societies…etc.

And may we have women who are willing to stick with men like Boaz, and not get carried away by BellaNaija and Social Media.

Welcome to the efamily here. Feel comfortable and share lessons with us often.

      Stay blessed. xx

  • Just getting to read this post, thanks Bolaji for sharing. I’ve never really thought about the person/character of Boaz, been focusing on Ruth and Naomi… one striking question I took from this post is “Who is your “husband-to-be” sitting with and where is he sitting?” Serious food for thought ooo

Plus I love the way you talk serious matter in a humorous way, lol… thank God for Jesus, you now know when to RUN aka no more dulling, hehe.
    Much love hun, xo

    • And thank you D for reading. Yeah, we mostly focus on Ruth and Naomi, but getting lessons from Boaz will actually help a lot of women in choosing a spouse (with God’s direction). Someone mentioned me on Twitter and stated that reading Lessons from Boaz helped him think a lot about himself. So, this can help guys become better partners too.

I’m glad a part of it really spoke to you. The person he is sitting with and the location matters o. It is true that Jesus sat with “sinners” as people like to put it, but as stated, God will show us signs in a partner’s attitude. I do not think that is an excuse to be at the bar every weekend or at the club…you get?

Haha. I’m sure many of you are tired of me sef. LOL. But I love you though…

      Thanks dear. Stay awesome.
