Good morning everyone!
Again I say, Happy New month!!!
May this month bring grace, favour, and fulfillment like never before to everyone of us. Amen.
Today’s letter is by my sweetheart! I met Iris through my roommate and she’s the first Ghanaian I became close with. She’s funny and oh so beautiful! Definition of black beauty.
I know some of us must have heard about the flood and blast that killed many people in Ghana. Well, her Letter is based on that day. It’s quite long, but I promise that it’s worth the read!
Our God is truly a shepherd who doesn’t let us wander away. If not, where we for be?
Here’s her Letter:
At long last I can put on my CV that I also featured on Bolaji’s blog ooo! (LOL)
It was another Wednesday morning; it didn’t look special than the previous day. I rushed out of the house with a frantic look at my watch. “Drat! I’ll be late for work! Already 6:45 am!” That was what I was muttering to myself as I walked ran to the junction to get a cab to the main road for a bus to Osu where I work.
It’s funny how sometimes as Christians; we can forget ourselves and talk to God as if we sat in Nursery 1 with him. (Well, technically we did because he has always been with us. He knew us before our conception and right from our entrance into this world, He never left our sides! Praise Jesus!!!)
What I mean is that we sometimes take Him for granted, like he was our classmate. I’m sometimes guilty of this.
Particularly on this morning, I was just telling God; “ let me get to work early ooo, let the bus driver use shortcut ooo, part the traffic for me like red sea ooo.”
Funny enough, I didn’t even tell God to take me to work safely and bring me back home safely po! I guess, I took it as a given that He will definately do that for me.
Okay so by 5:24pm I was out of the office, waiting in front of my office for a taxi. It was drizzling but I didn’t take note of it. Why bother about this light rain when I had jollof and salad to look forward to?
I was on my way to a friend’s house to eat his mom’s famous Wednesday jollof, chicken and salad. I was in high spirits oh!
Fast forward to 8:30pm, my plate of jollof was long gone by then. It was still raining so my friend and his dad decided to drive me all the way to my house, against all my trying to convince them to let me take public transport.
We set off then and this is where and when I started to realize the tank-full of mercy and grace God had in store for me that day!
30 minutes into our journey, the car was literally swimming in the rivers of water furiously running on the streets. We couldn’t tell whether the car was on solid ground or in the sea. It was jet black and just a few headlights of other cars were in sight.
I was then asked whether I would prefer to change direction and head to my parents place. I don’t know why, but it was as if God had put a stubborn spirit in me to adamantly refuse and go my place instead. My friend and his dad pleaded and pleaded for me to go to my parents’ house but I was adamant to go to my house instead, so they finally gave in and drove on.
Little did I know that if I hadn’t stood my grounds and had agreed to go to my parents, I might not be alive to tell this story today. Myself and my good Samaritans as well!
Why? Because we would have had to pass through Circle (A location in Accra, Ghana) and exactly through the place where I was to find out the next day what sad and nasty incident had occurred.
FATHER IN HEAVEN, THANK YOU! THESE WORDS; SO SIMPLE YET CARRIES ALL THE HEARTFELT GRATITUDE I WANT TO SHOW YOU! NO WORDS ARE ENOUGH TO SHOW YOU HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE YOUR LOVE, GOODNESS AND MERCY TOWARDS ME! I DON’T DESERVE YOU, YET YOU LOVE ME ENDLESSLY. I GET BITTER AND ANGRY AT YOU WHEN THINGS DON’T GO MY WAY SOMETIMES. BUT THE VERY NEXT MOMENT; YOU SHOW ME THE BIGGER PICTURE AND WOW ME WITH BETTER OPTIONS. I LOVE YOU LORD, YOU ARE MY FOREVER SWEETHEART, I CANT LIVE WITHOUT YOU! YOU’RE JUST TOO AMAZING AND AWESOME FOR WORDS! WHO CAN COMPARE TO YOU OH LORD? WHO???
Three hours into our journey to my house (this was around 11:40pm) and we still hadn’t gotten to even half of the distance. My friend’s father suddenly decided to backtrack and use another route.
Little did we know that it was God that caused him to do so. If we had continued on, we would have had to use another route which had also suffered serious flooding with cars bumping into each other, buses overturned and a whole lot of mess I don’t even want to imagine!
OH MY SWEET JESUS, I STAND IN AWE OF YOU! (BOLAJI, YOU HAVE TO TEACH ME SOME NAIJA WORDS I CAN USE TO ROMANCE MY DARLING JESUS OOH!) GHANA DICTIONARY IS TOO BLAND SOMETIMES!
BUT LORD, YOU SEE MY HEART AND ALL IT SAYS IS ‘THANK YOU!’
We continued on this new route, still in serious traffic because of walls that had broken down and fallen unto the streets. Even debris had been washed unto the roads and cars which could no longer move because they had no fuel or water had entered their engines. But at least we were moving, albeit slowly.
Just then, my friend’s dad said; “oh my goodness! Iris, you need to pray now, the tank is almost empty and if we don’t find a fuel station soon, we might not be able to continue.”
You can’t imagine my alarm at this! It was already past midnight and almost 1:00am! The Holy Spirit just whispered to me, “Be anxious for nothing, remember? What do you have to do?”
I said, okay I hear and just simply told God: “Lord, I really need you to come through for me right now, please get us safely to the nearest fuel station before this car stops and let us all get home safe.”
That was it ohh! That was it!
It felt like like magic or a movie trick; the fuel gauge just started climbing up! My jaw just dropped and my eyes couldn’t move from watching this miracle. I was just saying in my head; “Lord, seriously? Just like that? Wow! Wow! Wow!”
My friend and his dad couldn’t believe it either. It took another thirty minutes before we got to a fuel station but by then, all of us in the car knew we didn’t need it. All the same, my good Samaritans pulled into the station to buy some fuel. It was a cover up so they could use their washroom at that ungodly hour.
Even the fact that the station was still open at that time was God’s provision for us; just in case our faith couldn’t trust that He would sort us out that night.
DEAR FATHER, I AM SORRY FOR EVERY TIME THAT I HAVE NOT TRUSTED IN YOU, OR TRIED TO DO THINGS MY WAY BECAUSE I FELT YOU WERE DELAYING. THANK YOU FOR NOT GIVING UP ON ME AND STILL BLOWING MY MIND AWAY WITH EVERY OPPORTUNITY.
I’M GRATEFUL AND WILL FOREVER SING YOUR PRAISE. WHO IS IRIS, THAT YOU ARE SO MINDFUL OF ME?
I LOVE YOU BEYOND WHAT WORDS CAN DESCRIBE OH LORD, YOU’RE JUST TOO MUCH FOR ME! THANK YOU FOR LOVING ME!
At long last, by 2:24am, we were at my gate, safe and sound with nothing gone wrong. Even at that time, I had no idea of the chaos that had happened in the rest of Accra.
I bid my good Samaritans a good morning. The man just shook his head, looked at me quietly and said; “Iris, God is really with you.” I smiled, thanked them for bringing me home and entered my house.
I could hardly walk uprightly for sitting in the car for close to 6 hours and with all the cold. I crept into bed like that, and slept soundly like a baby.
I woke up the next morning and turned on my phone only to read of the Circle disaster, and see pictures of accidents and other messy events that had taken place in other places.
All the routes I would have used if I had used public transport or decided to go to my parents’ house had been badly affected and it was so clear that God had been at work for my sake.
I AM NOT MORE SPECIAL THAN THOSE THAT DIED IN THE FLOOD OR FIRE!
I AM NOT MORE RIGHTEOUS THAN THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES OR PROPERTIES. THE BUSINESSES THAT COLLAPSED, THE BREADWINNERS THAT WERE LOST, THE CHILDREN WHO BECAME ORPHANS, THE PARENTS WHO BECAME CHILDLESS; I AM NOT MORE SPECIAL THAN THEM.
LORD FOR DECIDING TO SHOW YOUR STUBBORN DAUGHTHER THIS MERCY AND GRACE, I CANT THANK YOU ENOUGH.
I CANT APPRECIATE YOU ENOUGH, EVEN WORDS FAIL ME AT PRAISING YOU.
BUT THIS HEART WILL FOREVER TESTIFY OF YOUR GOODNESS! I AM STUCK TO YOU BY SUPERNATUAL GLUE OOH, I’M GOING NOWHERE FROM YOUR PRESENCE.
I LOVE YOU LORD, I ACKNOWLEDGE YOU TO BE MY LORD.
LET ALL THE EARTH WORSHIP YOUR MAJESTY AND LET YOUR FULLNESS REIGN IN US!
I LOVE YOU PASS!
A GRATEFUL BLACK GH GIRL
Hmm! Need I add anything?
God blows my mind every time.
EVERY SINGLE TIME!
I remember how I frantically checked on everyone I knew when I heard about the flood and fire; since I was already back home. That fire that burnt too many people to death was right on the way to my school and happened at a very central place! What made it worse was that people ran to the fuel station for safety from the flood. Anybody could have been there at that time.
But all I heard was testimonies from people. Friends who had left the station an hour before the explosion. Some that were already dressed to go out and would have passed Circle. Some that had to enter the water to get home.
We even have to repaint our place because my roommate says the rain affected it; but that’s so little to what went on that day.
All we say is Thank you Lord.
Thank you for Iris and everyone you spared.
Thank you even for those who lost their lives, because in everything, though difficult, we will give you praise!
Have a great weekend everyone!
