The Word – Fast

Good Monday Morning! (It’s still morning in many Countries, let’s not get selfish here!)

The Word – Fast

When some people here the word ‘Fast’ in the Christian context, they either sigh or tune off immediately.

Some believe that special people have been blessed with the ‘gift’ of fasting. But, where in the Bible was fasting described as a gift; where some are strong enough to do it and some are not because it’s not their gift from God? Honestly though, if that’s the case, then everyone’s gift will probably be to eat.

Anyway, I can’t pretend like I always jump on fasts! In fact, the next fasting period in The Ambassadors RCCG (my church here) is always announced under the ‘GOODNEWS’ part of announcements. Most of us laugh when it’s announced. Cuz we don’t expect fasting to be announced under good news. Like, really?

I’d however like to share a few things with you today. Fasting isn’t a punishment, it’s an investment!

During the long holiday, I totally dropped my fasting once a week routine. Then I got back to school and one message my Pastor preached sliced through me ehn! He specifically talked about those who used to fast once a week before, but have now stopped. I mean, why didn’t he pick on those who used to fast twice a week or more?

I’m not going to write to you like I’m an expert on knowing how to subdue the body! The plain truth is that fasting can be tough. Sometimes, your stomach is saying something, but your spirit is saying something else. But I have come to know that it is VERY ESSENTIAL.

“And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said,”Why could we not cast it out?” So Jesus said to them,”Because of your unbelief; for assuredly,I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you. However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.”  Matthew 17:21

See, we’ve just got to fight mahn. Everything is first won in the spiritual! With the above passage, Jesus was saying that without fasting and praying, some miracles just cannot happen!

I now try to drink water immediately I wake, and last week, I had put 2 pure waters sachets beside me while about to do my quiet time; when my hand ‘coincidentally’ opened to a day in ‘Open Heavens’ that talked about fasting and prayer.

I quickly put the sachets back and thanked God for reminding me that I had to fast that day.

What helps me through the process is that God helps me not to see it as a punishment. I used to do that before, but it only led me to think of food the more! Thinking of it as an investment has helped me to know that it is grooming and developing my spirit!

And please, let me just put this out there; do not deceive yourself by doing hunger strike- this means fasting without praying or studying the word.

Do not stay away from food all day and then jump on any food in site when it’s time to break the fast. Even 5 minutes of praying and studying the word will do amazing things.

I for one have noticed that my spirit is always more ‘alert’ when I’m fasting!

Last week I was in a dilemma about a certain next move in my life. I was really confused.

I hadn’t actually expected God to answer me during my time with Him before eating, but He did so! And in such a profound manner too.

Truth is, I may not have noticed or even clearly heard Him like I did that day if I was not fasting. My body was in check, while my spirit was all out!

I encourage you today to begin to take time out to fast and pray more often. If this is new to you, you can start maybe once in 2 weeks or just simply ask God how He’d like you to.

It’s not easy, (there’s grace though) but fasting definitely is worth it!

Food isn’t everything. Sometimes even our digestive organs need some rest, give them!

Fasting isn’t a punishment. Don’t leave it to others with the thinking that fasting isn’t just your ‘talent’. It’s a massive lie! Fasting isn’t anybody’s talent o.

Look at Christ, the way He shut the devil up after His 40 day fast. His Spirit was very much ready to face the taunts of the devil; and He wants same for us. He wants our Spirit-man to always be alert!

Fasting accompanied with prayers = amazing amazing things in the spirit and clear guidance on one’s purpose.

Do not joke with it.

Have a blessed week ahead!

Love always,

B.
