Redefined Masculinity: The real David and Goliath story.

Hey hey hey!

And so, without a sword, David defeated and killed Goliath with a sling and a stone!
1 Samuel 17: 30

Most people like fairy tales so we like to tell them. In the David and Goliath story, many of us leave out the whole truth, we only tell a part of it…of how David was courageous, bold and fearless and how he was willing to stop the shame of his people and their army.

The ONLY reason David was able to defeat Goliath was because he had allowed himself be groomed by God. In the wilderness, he and God worked on His killing skills.

“No,” answered Saul. “How could you fight him? You’re just a boy, and he has been a soldier all his life!”
“Your Majesty,” David said, “I take care of my Father’s sheep. Whenever a Lion or a Bear carries off a lamb, I go after it, attack it, and rescue the lamb. And if the Lion or Bear turns on me, I grab it by the throat and beat it to death. I have killed Lions and Bears, and I will do the same to this heathen Philistine, who has defied the army of the living God. The Lord has saved me from Lions and Bears; he will save me from this Philistine…”
1 Samuel 17: 33-37

Oh David, that many men may learn from you!
This is David AFTER being anointed as King talking to Saul about his service in the bush where no man saw him and how he had been training under God, not knowing that a day like that was ahead of him. (Or maybe he knew but didn’t particular know the exact time.)

I saw a post by an acquaintance on Facebook recently on how he had grown his brand and how he now teaches others how to do the same. I could smell a lot of self effort in the post and that’s sadly what many young men do now. This myth called “self-made” is all many guys run after and only at the end do they realize that you can’t really sustain any thing without God.

I wanted to title this post “Serve like your life depends on it” before but changed to the current one because really, this is a part of David’s story many people skip.

David did not ‘build his brand’ by strategically placing himself with certain people or forcing himself up the ‘get-money-fast’ ladder. He built his brand in the wilderness, without man’s praise or approval.

Are you willing to do the same? To serve God with your whole life, because really, God is your whole life!

God wants to build your character and groom you. He wants to build your brand, but not as the world does it…He wants you to take your focus off people and their opinions.
I remember and might write a full post on my struggle for likes, followers and friends. I wanted to fit in so bad and didn’t want to be the odd one out, not knowing that God has called me to be the misfit. I was never made to be the same shade as everyone else….same as you.

I was saved and loved to write, yet, I couldn’t bring myself to share anything. Writing about Christ wasn’t cool in my eyes and posts like that didn’t get a lot of likes anyway… I’d post something and check every hour how many likes I had gathered!

The struggle was real yoo! And that’s why I know that MANY people struggle with this same thing. Men tend to be quiet about a lot of things but everyday, I see how many struggle to be ‘among’, to make money, ride nice cars and walk with the cool dudes. Who that one ‘epp’?

I wrote inside my bible that ‘David could kill Goliath ONLY because he had learned to kill Lions and Bears.’

What if he said he was tired and didn’t want to tend sheep for his Father?
Where do you think he learned to use the sling and stone?

Or you think the anointing just fell ‘gbam’ the day he saw Goliath?

Please, don’t get me wrong. God does perform miracles, but not the ones that will destroy you. God is a God of process for a reason and He will not take you where your character can’t sustain.

We like to use the verse that talks about God no giving us more than we can bear when illustrating hardship, but as mean as it might sound, God does that with pleasures too. He knows you and what you can take. And there are things that will instantly destroy you if you do not obey God now and tend to the sheep He has placed in front of you.

“…All right,” Saul answered. “Go, and the Lord be with you.” He gave his own armour to David for him to wear: a bronze helmet, which he put on David’s head, and a coat of armour. David strapped Saul’s sword over the armour and tried to walk, but he couldn’t, because he wasn’t used to wearing them. “I can’t fight with all this,” he said to Saul. “I’m not used to it.” So he took it all off. He took his shepherd’s stick and then picked up five smooth stones from the stream and put them in his bag. With his sling ready, he went out to meet Goliath.
1 Samuel 17: 37-40

This verses right here can be preached for a whole year! You mean David didn’t end up fighting with his Oga’s strategy? The same thing that protected Saul felt too heavy and weird on him such that he went to battle with God alone…
Well, yes!

How many times do we spy people and start to incorporate their ways so that we can ‘get better results’.
“You’re a man and this is how men do it!”

Really?

Saul was a man.
David was a man.

The difference was that one had God and the other didn’t. One followed God and the other didn’t. One was trained and groomed by God, the other wasn’t. One allowed his character be built by God, the other didn’t.

Who would you rather be?

Goliath saw David and insulted him, only if he knew who was with the guy.

Dear man, don’t try to do what the world is doing. It might seem like people are getting ahead of you and you’re just there being ‘pruned by God’, trust me, pruning is good!

Dear man, God loves you; let His will be done in your life. Follow His vision and not yours.

Let me end the REDEFINED MASCULINITY series with this lovely article I saw by Richard Mofe Damijo (RMD). I tagged few of my male friends under the post but it’s something every man ought to read. I couldn’t copy & paste from Instagram so please read it from the picture:

  1. This is so timely for me, to build up momentum for this week.God bless you ma’am.It’s good to enjoy the process and celebrate along the way.God is not a magician he is God of process. This got me thinking over the weekend.Ravens fed Elijah and after a while God said Elijah needs to move to Zarephath in order for him to be fed by the widow. Why can’t God stop the brook from being dry? Then I remembered that two-third of God’s name is GO. Also when the Isrealities were complaining, and Moses cried out to God.God said tell them to move forward that’s continue the process. I pray God gives us the grace to enjoy the process before getting to our promised land.

  2. Thank God for this post! And that post from RMD just summed everything up…. we honestly need a men with a change of mind…like…the ‘good’ ones are the ‘losers’… *sigh*
